Having the correct hangers could make a difference in your closet organization.

Do you fold your clothes and put them in the dresser, or should you be hanging them in your closet ? Maximizing closet storage space can be a pain in the neck. Once you decide on which garments get the hanger treatment—and which are better off tucked away you will feel so much more organized. Remember the life of your clothes depends on how you store them. -This blog was Inspired by an article from Martha Stewart

Decide on what type of hanger you need.

Even though closets look the best with one type and color hanger I think you need four types: Velvet, padded, wood and clip. Delicate items—such as silk shirts or spaghetti-strapped tops tend to slip off hangers, and work best with velvet hangers. Those extra delicate items, such as almost weightless chiffon or lace laden shirts will benefit from padded hangers. I use wood hangers for heavy clothes and jackets. When it comes to pants, I like the clip hangers because there is no chance of wrinkles.

What should we hang in our closets ?

Which clothes absolutely belong on a hanger? Dresses and blouses for the most part, should always be hung. Any fabric that wrinkles needs to be hung. If they are heavy or beaded the hanger will do damage by stretching the garment. Use your judgement on this. Jackets of any kind should be hung. Always hang linen. It is notorious for becoming wrinkled. While jeans don’t necessarily need a place in your closet, you should definitely plan to hang all your other pants. Dress and casual pants should always be hung on a clip hanger especially if you are not a perfect folder. I hang them the long way but if space is a problem you could fold them over using the fancy hangers (picture below) Check them the night before and spray some water on the crease mark and they should be good to go in the morning. Never forget about owning a good clothes brush as an essential closet tool.

What clothing should I fold ?

Always fold sweaters. I can not think of any kind of sweater that should hang. Active wear, yoga pants, workout tops, or anything you’d wear to the gym, plan to fold. Shorts should always be folded as it really doesn’t make sense to hang them.

T-shirts can be hung, folded, or stacked. There’s no doubt that hanging them reduces the chance for wrinkles. This depends on how much space you have and the quality of the T-shirt.

Jeans are the easiest of pants to fold since they are usually on the thicker side and will hold their shape when folded. Of course, if you have room to hang your favorite jeans , go ahead.

Scarves can be folded, rolled, or hung. I have a lot and usually wrap them around my coat hangers. When I open my coat closet I decide on which one to grab. I have as many hooks in my coat closet that will fit. These are also filled with scarves. I never wear a coat without a scarf.
